St Albans

This historic township was established at the head of navigation of the Macdonald River. The Settlers Arms Inn was first licensed in 1836, although the present building, with its distinctive jerkin-head roof line dates to the 1840s. In the flood of 1889 waters almost reached the ceiling of the lower floor.

The two stone churches in St Albans were built in the 1890s. The heritage listed St Albans bridge was designed by de Burgh, and opened in 1902. It replaced an earlier one damaged in the 1889 flood.

A magistrate travelled between Wollombi and St Albans to hear cases at the St Albans Courthouse constructed in the 1890s to replace an earlier one washed away in the 1889 flood.

Sections of the road between Wisemans Ferry and St Albans are unsealed. The road from St Albans to Bucketty is all unsealed, and may be impassable after heavy rain.
